March 14th, 2024, marks the 19th "World Kidney Day," with the theme of "Kidney Health for All: Advancing Fair and Optimal Healthcare Services and Drug Treatment Practices."

To enhance public awareness of kidney health, on March 13th, Hainan Chengmei Hospital and Hainan Cancer Hospital jointly organized a "World Kidney Day" free clinic activity in the outpatient hall of the Hainan Cancer Hospital. The activity aimed to widely disseminate knowledge of kidney health and promote awareness of related disease prevention and treatment.

The kidneys are important detoxification organs in the human body. In China, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease has been increasing year by year, with at least one out of every ten individuals being a kidney patient. Chronic kidney disease has become another major health threat to humans, following cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. It is projected that by 2040, kidney diseases will become the fifth leading cause of loss of life expectancy.

Professor Chen Wen, Director of the Nephrology Department at Hainan Chengmei Hospital and the 11th National Committee Member of the Nephrology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, explained that chronic kidney disease has an insidious onset and early stages may not have obvious symptoms, making it difficult to detect. The majority of patients are diagnosed when they are already in the middle or late stages of the disease. At this point, the risk of developing severe complications (such as hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, etc.) and progressing to end-stage kidney disease is significantly increased. As a result, the mortality rate also rises, earning chronic kidney disease the nickname "silent killer."

During the free clinic, experts from the Nephrology Department of Hainan Chengmei Hospital, including Director Chen Wen, Deputy Director Wu Wei, and Deputy Director Wang Li, as well as Director Qu Jun from the Urology Department of Hainan Cancer Hospital, provided on-site consultations to the people seeking medical advice. They conducted patient interviews with patience and meticulousness, offering appropriate diagnosis and treatment plans and providing professional guidance on medication. Additionally, they offered free blood pressure measurements and distributed educational brochures on kidney disease to raise their awareness, and also provided practical advice on diet, sleep habits, and lifestyle choices, aiming to enhance understanding of kidney disease and promote better prevention.

56-year-old Aunt Liu came for a consultation due to kidney disease caused by high blood sugar levels. After a detailed discussion about her diet, sleep patterns, and other lifestyle habits, Professor Chen Wen recommended that she change her dietary habits to include a light and healthy diet. He also suggested incorporating appropriate exercise to control blood sugar levels and reduce the strain on her kidneys.

Professor Chen Wen emphasized the importance of standardized medication, appropriate diet, regular exercise, and periodic follow-up visits, especially for patients with kidney disease. In daily life, it is important to maintain a light and healthy diet that is low in protein, fat, and sodium. For patients with uremia, it is necessary to strictly control fluid intake. At the same time, patients with chronic kidney disease should pay attention to the control of risk factors such as blood pressure, blood sugar, blood uric acid, blood lipid levels, and proteinuria. They should adhere to regular medication and undergo regular check-ups under the guidance of a nephrologist.

"The prevention and timely treatment of chronic kidney disease are crucial. Early detection of chronic kidney disease can help control its progression and improve treatment outcomes." Professor Chen Wen reminds that if symptoms such as increased foamy urine, darkened urine color, increased frequency of urination, and swelling are observed, it is important to seek medical attention promptly in order to achieve early detection and treatment.
