On 1 July, the 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championships held in Indonesia came with a deplorable news - 17-year-old Zhang Zhijie of the Chinese badminton team suddenly fainted during the mixed team group stage match, and died after being sent to the hospital as a result of failure to rescue.

Some emergency specialists pointed out that from the video of the game, Zhang Zhijie collapsed and convulsed without contact and died after being taken to the hospital, which is basically consistent with sudden sports death.

The unfortunate death of the young national badminton player is regrettable.

Its also thought-provoking:

In the event of sudden death or cardiac arrest of another person.

What should we do,

To catch a glimpse of life for the patient.

To make such misfortunes less frequent?

Lin Xiaoming, the Director of the Cardiology Department of Chengmei Hospital in Hainan, said that it is crucial to perform rapid assessment and judgment on patients with cardiac arrest in the first place, implement high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use AED for rapid defibrillation, and win the golden four minutes to save the patients life.

Learn CPR and AED to master life-saving skills.

Operation method of CPR

I. Judging the surroundings

Make sure the environment is safe for rescues.

II. Judging the presence or absence of consciousness

Call for help and call EMS at 120 to get an AED.

III. Chest compression

Overlap your hands, with the heel of the lower hand placed on the lower part of the chest along the line connecting the two nipples of an adult. Press down vertically with overlapping hands, quickly and forcefully for 30 times, at a rate of 100 to 120 times per minute, with each press about 5 to 6 centimeters deep.

IV. Open the airway

Place one hand on the patients forehead and use the index finger and middle finger of the other hand to lift the lower part of the jaw bone, allowing the head to tilt back fully.

V. Perform artificial respiration

Pinch the patients nose with one hand; blow into the patients mouth for about 1 second; stop when you see the patients chest and abdomen rise and fall; perform two times of artificial respiration.

VI. Repeat the cycle

Return to step 1 and continue to perform high-quality CPR with a compression-ventilation ratio of 30:2.

Usage of AED

AEDs are portable and easy to operate, with slight variations in operation methods among different brands and models. Non-professional emergency responders can safely use them after training.

01 Turn on the AED

Open the packaging, take out the AED, turn on the power switch, and follow the voice prompts to operate.

02 Place electrode sheet

According to the illustration on the AED electrode pads, attach one electrode pad to the upper right side of the patients bare chest (right edge of the sternum, just below the clavicle), and attach the other electrode pad to the patients left nipple externally (at the fifth intercostal space after the left anterior axillary line).

Note: If there are two rescuers at the scene, while one rescuer is administering CPR, the other rescuer begins operating the AED, and CPR cannot be interrupted by applying electrode pads.

03 AED analyzing heart rhythm

While the AED is analyzing the rhythm, the rescuer verbally signals those around him not to touch the patient, shouts "please dont touch the patient", and determines whether shock defibrillation is required.

04 Defibrillation by electric shock

If defibrillation is recommended by the AED, it needs to be reconfirmed that none of the personnel had contact with the patient. After the AED has finished charging, press the "Shock" button to discharge or the AED will automatically discharge and defibrillate. If the AED suggests that defibrillation is not required, CPR should be performed immediately if necessary.

05 Continuation of CPR after defibrillation

Immediately continue CPR after shock defibrillation. After 2 minutes the AED automatically analyses the rhythm again to determine whether defibrillation needs to be continued. Repeat this until the patient regains a heartbeat and spontaneous breathing, or until professional first aiders arrive.

The writer sincerely hope that you dont use these two skills.

But please learn it!

One less regret, one more chance of survival.

So how to effectively carry out sudden death warning and assessment?

How to avoid or reduce the risk of heart disease?

Recently, the magnetic resonance coronary angiography (MRCA) project, which does not require contrast agents and sets a new standard for non-invasive cardiac coronary artery examination, was first implemented at Hainan Chengmei Hospital. Renowned domestic experts in the field, together with industry specialists, have joined forces to combine cutting-edge instruments and high-definition imaging with the highest level of image interpretation in the country. This has resulted in the formation of a "national-level" diagnostic capability, aiming to comprehensively evaluate cardiac function and significantly improve the predictability of sudden cardiac death.
