To beat the summer heat, many people turn to cold drinks and chilled foods. But what does traditional Chinese medicine say about these methods?

The National Health Commission recently held a press conference to discuss the relationship between seasonal changes and health.

Experts mentioned that for healthy people, consuming moderate amounts of cold drinks and using air conditioning can effectively help to quickly cool down and prevent energy loss during the hot summer months.

1. Drinking too many cold beverages can harm the digestive system, causing issues like indigestion, stomach pain, and diarrhea, particularly affecting children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions.

2. During the summer, when youre sweating a lot and your pores are open, suddenly stepping into a very cold air-conditioned room or being directly exposed to the cold air can cause your pores to close. This can trap your body heat, resulting in headaches, fatigue, and weakness. Over time, this can harm your digestive system and overall health, potentially triggering chronic conditions. However, its important not to view air conditioning negatively; maintaining a comfortable temperature, especially at night, can improve sleep quality.

3. During the summer, it’s crucial to take care of your yang energy. This means going to bed late and waking up early, taking a nap at noon, exercising moderately to sweat, keeping a good mood, and avoiding prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Pregnant women and children should especially avoid outdoor activities between 12 PM and 3 PM.

4. For your diet, consider consuming moderate amounts of spices like ginger, pepper, and Sichuan peppercorns, along with foods like hawthorn and dried tangerine peel that aid digestion and regulate qi. Additionally, foods like coix seed and poria can help eliminate dampness and support digestive health. By adjusting your daily routine and diet, you can promote the smooth flow of yang energy and qi, preventing chronic diseases caused by summer heat and humidity and minimizing the impact of summer heat on your body.

What are the primary ingredients in "Sanfu Plaster"? What benefits does it provide, and who should use it?

Experts explain that "Sanfu Plaster" comes from an ancient Ming Dynasty remedy called "Tianjiu." Its main ingredient is white mustard seed, supplemented with dried ginger and other warming herbs, creating an external treatment. Originally, this treatment was used for asthma patients. The plaster causes blisters at acupuncture points, providing continuous stimulation to help prevent illnesses.

Currently, hospitals have modified the formula. Each hospital offers different formulations tailored to various groups of people. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Outpatient Clinic at Hainan Chengmei Hospital is now offering Sanfu Plaster treatments.

By applying Chinese herbal medicine directly to acupuncture points, this treatment warms the body, dispels cold, removes dampness, and eliminates phlegm. It helps to expel stubborn cold from the body, replenish yang energy, and boost the immune system. This method is particularly effective for chronic diseases and cancer patients, as it can significantly enhance the bodys natural immunity.

Tips

01 Sanfu Plaster contains aromatic, dispersing herbs

Its normal to experience skin pigmentation, redness, mild itching, burning, pain, and minor blistering. If you feel a burning sensation, remove the plaster immediately. If blisters form after removal, apply burn ointment for mild cases or iodine if blisters burst, let the scabs fall off naturally, and prevent infection. Seek medical help if the reaction is severe. Avoid cold showers on treatment day; use warm water instead.

02 clothing

Sanfu Plaster is typically applied to the neck, back, abdomen, and waist. Wear loose, dark-colored clothing. Women are advised not to wear dresses.

03 High temperatures during the Sanfu period

Sweating can dilute the medication and reduce its effectiveness.

04 diet

Avoid certain foods on treatment day, such as beef, roast goose, duck, peanuts, taro, beans, cold foods, shrimp, and crab.

05 Treatment should be done in moderation

Using more plasters does not mean better results. Some patients think applying more to each acupuncture point is beneficial, but effectiveness is not related to the amount of medication. Trying the treatment only once or twice will not provide immediate results.

06 Use medications immediately for best results

It’s not recommended to take the medication home for family use because aromatic herbs are highly volatile and can lose effectiveness with prolonged air exposure.

Sanfu Plaster is not a cure-all

Sanfu Plaster contraindications

1. Severe cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, liver, kidney, or hematopoietic system diseases

2. Pregnant women, those with heavy menstrual flow, blood heat syndrome, recent external fever, or yin deficiency fever.

3. People with particularly sensitive skin to medications.

4. Due to the delicate skin of infants and young children, they are prone to skin burns. Caution is advised for children under three years old undergoing Tianjiu treatment. For those who require it, limit application time to about 30 minutes
