China | Physicians' Day

On August 15th, on the occasion of the upcoming 7th China Physicians Day, Hainan Cancer Hospital and Hainan Chengmei Hospital held a Physicians Day commendation ceremony to honor 29 outstanding individuals and 22 advanced collectives from the two hospitals.

At the commendation ceremony, Shi Yaohui, Secretary of the Party Committee and Executive President of the two hospitals, on behalf of the Party Committee and the leadership team of the hospital, presented high respect to all the doctors who worked hard in the clinical front line, and warmly congratulated the award-winning individuals and collectivity. Shi Yaohui pointed out that all colleagues from the two hospitals should seize the opportunity of China Physicians’ Day, keep in mind the hospital motto of “virtue, excellence in medicine, collaboration, and innovation”, continuously strengthen medical ethics, refine medical skills, and strive to provide the public with higher-quality, more efficient, and convenient medical and health services.

“Medical work is a noble cause that contributes to the health and well-being of the people. "For a long time, doctors have been a respected profession." Guo Qiyong, the Acting Chairman of Hainan Cancer Hospital, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the 368 physicians and 168 technicians who have been standing on the frontline and wholeheartedly protecting the health of the people. He said that although Hainan Cancer Hospital and Hainan Chengmei Hospital have not been established for long, they have developed rapidly. From being a "blank sheet of paper" in the past to now becoming a "new highland" of medical technology and medical services in Hainan, and becoming a medical service institution trusted by the people and recognized by society, this glory comes from the joint efforts of all medical staff.

Guo Qiyong emphasized that as a young hospital in vigorous development, middle-aged and young backbone physicians are the mainstay of the hospital, as well as its future and hope. The development of the hospital cannot be achieved without the succession of physicians from the older, middle-aged, and younger generations. It is hoped that the middle-aged and young physicians will cherish the opportunities provided by the platform, continue to inherit the "spirit of great medicine" from the older generation of physicians, and constantly improve their personal professional qualities with a hardworking and diligent spirit and a dedicated and dedicated spirit, jointly contributing to the protection of the health of the people.

At the ceremony, individual and team awards such as “Most Beautiful Physician”, “Most Beautiful Technician”, “Most Beautiful Pharmacist”, as well as “Medical Ethics and Professionalism Collective Award” and “Escort and Protection Collective Award” were all presented to the winners selected through competitions. “Most Beautiful Physicians” Yu Shuyong, Xiao Gang, Tang Peng, Qian Yong, Tu Ruisha, etc., went up to receive their awards. The award-winning physician representatives, Dong Wen and Meng Yan, shared their love for the medical profession, their profound experience of growing and progressing together with the hospital, and their deep affection for considering the hospital as their home, combining with their work experiences. They used this to motivate themselves, cherish the opportunities provided by the platform, fulfill their responsibilities in their positions, and continue to contribute to the development of the hospital.

Leaders of the hospital’s board of directors, including Xu Minggui, Li Lei, and Guo Juan, as well as Professor Wang Ping, the former president of Tianjin Cancer Hospital and the chief expert of the Radiotherapy Center of Hainan Cancer Hospital, and other leaders from the party and administrative leadership teams of the two hospitals attended the commendation ceremony. The commendation ceremony was presided over by Vice President Liu Yuehong.

One year has passed swiftly, which has been spent on forge ahead

In the first half of 2024, the number of emergency visits in the two hospitals increased by 35.55% year-on-year, and the number of outpatient visits increased by 14.19% year-on-year. The year-on-year growth rate of emergency visits was 21.36% higher than that of outpatient visits. The number of visits for common chronic diseases increased by 36.4% year-on-year, and the number of visits for cancer outpatient services increased by 20.4% year-on-year. The year-on-year growth rate of visits for common chronic diseases was 16% higher than that of visits for cancer outpatient services. The total number of hospitalizations and discharges increased by 15.91% and 16.7% year-on-year, respectively. Behind these data lies the rapid development of various medical services in the two hospitals, which is also a strong proof of the enhancement of their ability to provide medical services to the surrounding areas.

From establishing a one-stop oncology outpatient service area to enhance chronic disease management and services, to promoting deep integration and unified management between the two hospitals; from establishing oncology integration and geriatric integration medical centers, to carrying out the construction of a painless hospital; from strengthening standardized diagnosis and treatment, promoting the collaborative management of medical treatment, medical insurance, and pharmaceuticals, to actively carrying out three new projects, we have forged an elite medical team that is resilient and dares to take on challenges in a high-pressure environment. This has further improved medical service capabilities and enhanced the patient experience.

Promoting development through reform: building momentum and gathering energy for the competitiveness of the two hospitals

2024 is the first "Year of Management and Construction," the first "Year of Service Construction," and the first "Year of Reform" for the two hospitals. Since the beginning of this year, 372 new or revised regulations and systems related to medical care, human resources, finance, scientific research, and other areas have been introduced. A series of effective measures have been implemented, including reforming the position system to streamline and integrate departmental functions, reforming performance evaluation and distribution to improve quality and efficiency, refining talent selection criteria, and broadening talent promotion channels. These measures have not only improved the quality and efficiency of hospital work but also stimulated the endogenous motivation of employees, creating a virtuous cycle.

Driven by assessments: pursuing safe and high-quality medical development

With a year-on-year increase of 3.84% in grade IV surgeries and a year-on-year increase of 28.4% in minimally invasive surgeries, the medical quality and safety management capabilities of the two hospitals have continued to improve this year. We have refined 13 evaluation indicators for nursing outcome quality and developed 19 assessment standards for infection control and public health management in clinical medical technology departments. While experiencing rapid development, the two hospitals have tightly focused on medical quality and safety management, constantly improving the medical quality control and management system with a determined spirit. The importance of medical quality and safety as the “top priority” of our work has become a consensus, leading to continuous improvement in medical quality and safety and a rising patient satisfaction rate.

Seek breakthroughs through innovation: enhancing service capabilities through specialized work

Through continuous exploration and innovation, the two hospitals have vigorously developed new technologies and projects in areas such as oncology diagnosis and treatment, with 16 more "three new" projects compared to last year. In the first half of the year, the “Oncology Integrated Medical Center” was established, breaking down traditional disciplinary divisions and professional barriers to provide patients with comprehensive, multi-dimensional, and personalized oncology treatment and full-cycle management services. The construction of a "Painless Hospital" was fully launched, utilizing scientific pain assessment scales to effectively improve the quality of pain management, with an effective pain intervention rate of 97.7% for pain scores above four in the two hospitals. Efforts were made to promote “one-stop” diagnosis and treatment services for oncology outpatient clinics, addressing the “bottlenecks and difficulties” faced by cancer patients during follow-up visits and medication through online and offline integration. The “First Ask Responsibility System” was implemented, and manuals such as the “Service Language Manual”, “100 Questions on First Ask Responsibility”, and “Humanistic Service Quality Standards” were compiled. Starting with details such as behavioral norms and service courtesy, humanistic medical care was embedded into the service concept.

Putting people at the center: making cancer prevention and treatment beneficial to all

As the only Grade A tertiary specialized cancer hospital in the province, Hainan Cancer Hospital is highly integrated and collaboratively developed with the Hainan Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center, vigorously promoting the integrated services of “prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation” for cancer in the province. Since the beginning of this year, the hospital has actively promoted tumor registration and follow-up work, advanced the national major public health special activity of “Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Urban Cancer”, and achieved a 73% annual completion rate by July. Leveraging the construction of the Hainan Oncology Medical Consortium, 150 medical institutions have been contracted so far, further standardizing the tumor diagnosis and treatment model and bringing high-quality medical resources to lower levels. A total of 177 medical staff members have been selected and dispatched to conduct health education and themed clinic activities in 55 cities, counties, and villages across the province, delivering “health” to thousands of households. The concept of health check-ups has been widely promoted, with a year-on-year increase of 25.24% in the number of people undergoing check-ups, facilitating the shift from “passive treatment” to “proactive health” among the populace.

With the wind strong and the sails full, the sea and sky are vast, and we row vigorously to start a new journey. Hainan Cancer Hospital and Hainan Chengmei Hospital will continue to adhere to the service tenet of “patient-centeredness”, constantly strengthen their commitment to the well-being of the people, and continuously refine their medical skills and compassionate care, becoming a reliable medical force and a desirable destination for health and well-being for the people. To fulfill others’ aspirations and share the happiness together, let health contribute to a better life!
