“Watching Professor Yang Nong’s science popularization videos every day has become a part of my daily life.” Many patients have become fans of Professor Yang Nong, a renowned lung cancer diagnosis and treatment expert and a specially-appointed expert at Hainan Provincial Tumor Hospital, through these science popularization short videos, and Mr. Xu, aged 64, is one of them.

At the beginning of last year, shortly after his retirement, Mr. Xu was unfortunately diagnosed with lung cancer. “I felt that I was physically fit, and I was looking forward to enjoying life after retirement. This blow of cancer caught me off guard.”

In February of the same year, Mr. Xu underwent a lobectomy. The postoperative pathology indicated adenosquamous carcinoma, with the lesion invading the visceral pleural and chest wall. Fortunately, no cancer metastasis was found.

Subsequently, Mr. Xu underwent four cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy and started taking targeted drugs from July of that year.

In September of this year, Mr. Xu underwent axillary lymph node resection and biopsy due to enlarged unilateral axillary lymph nodes. The postoperative pathology indicated squamous cell carcinoma.

“I have always been a die-hard fan of Professor Yang Nong. When I saw the unfavorable postoperative report this time, my first thought was to consult him! He is highly skilled in medicine and has gained the trust of many patients. I firmly believe that he can provide me with a professional diagnosis and treatment plan.”

Mr. Xu is a “migratory bird” who spends winters in Haikou every year. In October of this year, upon returning to Hainan, Mr. Xu immediately rushed to Professor Yang Nong’s expert clinic.

“This is actually oligoprogression; the situation is not as dire as you might think,” said Professor Yang Nong after meticulously comparing CT scans taken before and after the two surgeries, and analyzing the genetic sequencing reports of the tissue samples submitted for examination on both occasions. He diagnosed Mr. Xu with oligoprogression in unilateral axillary lymph nodes.

“I heard the word ‘progression’. Does that mean I’m resistant to the treatment? Will there be major changes to the treatment plan?” Mr. Xu couldn’t help but feel anxious upon hearing ‘progression’.”

Disease progression comes in many forms. In medical terms, “oligometastasis” refers to one to five metastatic foci of a malignant tumor in a single distant organ.

The oligometastatic state represents a relatively benign phase of tumor biological aggressiveness, serving as a transitional stage between localized primary tumors and widespread metastasis. During this stage, the number of metastatic tumors is limited, and they can only metastasize to specific organs.

Based on the test results, Professor Yang Nong recommended either local intervention or continuation of targeted drug therapy, reassuring Mr. Xu repeatedly, “The current treatment plan is reliable. Don’t worry.”

“Due to my illness, my entire family has gone through a lot in the past two years. Fortunately, Professor Yang’s precise diagnosis and professional treatment advice have given me and my family hope,” said Mr. Xu excitedly after the consultation.
