Recently, the Nephrology Department at Hainan Chengmei Hospital, in collaboration with specialists from the Cardiology and Minimally Invasive Surgery departments, along with experts from the Respiratory, ICU, and Rehabilitation departments at Hainan Cancer Hospital, successfully treated a patient with an exceptionally complex case of chronic kidney failure.

On November 27, Mr. Liang, the patient, had his vital signs stabilized and was safely discharged.

Chronic Kidney Failure Patients Condition Suddenly Worsens

Mr. Liang, 55, was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke in 2022, which left him unable to care for himself. Soon after, he was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure. Over the past few years, he had undergone repeated treatments at various hospitals across the province.

In mid-October this year, Mr. Liang s condition suddenly worsened and continued to deteriorate. He was urgently transferred to the Nephrology Department at Hainan Chengmei Hospital for treatment.

Dr. Lin Rongyu, Associate Chief Physician of the Nephrology Department, explained that Mr. Liang presented with severe symptoms of respiratory and heart failure and was in critical condition.

Compounding the difficulty of his treatment, Mr. Liang not only faced severe heart and kidney dysfunction but also had multiple underlying health conditions, making his treatment even more complicated.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration Saves the Patient

The patients life was the top priority. Professor Chen Wen, Head of the Nephrology Department, immediately initiated a multidisciplinary team consultation. Together with the relevant specialists from Hainan Cancer Hospital, they devised a comprehensive treatment plan for the patient.

Professor Chen described Mr. Liangs treatment as extremely challenging. At that time, in addition to heart and kidney failure, the patient was suffering from conditions including a lung infection, severe malnutrition, hyperphosphatemia, hypokalemia, metabolic acidosis, hyperuricemia, among 26 other diseases. The treatment was akin to "a never-ending cycle of problems," where any misstep could have endangered the patients life.

Director Chens team conducts daily rounds.

The multidisciplinary teams from both Hainan Cancer Hospital and Hainan Chengmei Hospital worked closely to analyze and review Mr. Liang s condition comprehensively. They developed a detailed and individualized treatment plan. After extensive intervention by specialists in critical care, respiratory medicine, cardiology, and rehabilitation, the patients condition gradually stabilized, and his vital signs returned to normal.

Professor Chen Wen is a renowned nephrologist in the province. He has served two consecutive terms as the Chair of the Nephrology Committee of the Hainan Medical Association and is an expert in treating primary glomerular diseases, IgA nephropathy, lupus nephritis, hypertensive nephropathy, urate nephropathy, and diabetic nephropathy. He is particularly skilled in the clinical pathological diagnosis and treatment of severe and complex nephrological diseases.

The patients family commented afterward: Without the involvement of so many experts,it would have been extremely difficult to save their loved one. The doctors  respect for life and their sense of responsibility deeply moved us.
