With the arrival of the Year of the Snake, may fortune abound.
As one of the most important traditional festivals in China, “celebrating the New Year well” is a heartfelt wish for everyone. While indulging in the festive atmosphere, how can cancer patients safeguard their health? Our editor interviewed Dr. Dong Wen, Director of the Respiratory Medicine/Pulmonary Tumor Endoscopic Treatment Department at Hainan Cancer Hospital, and prepared a practical guide for a joyful “New Year celebration” to accompany everyone during this festive season.
Give Treatment a “Short Break” During the New Year—Resume Treatment After the Holiday
During the Spring Festival holiday, some cancer patients may choose to stop their medication or even treatment on their own, thinking it’s fine to resume after the holiday. This mindset is incorrect. For instance, the courses of radiotherapy and chemotherapy are determined based on the tumors growth cycle; stopping treatment can easily affect its efficacy.
Director Dong Wen recommends that cancer patients strictly adhere to their doctors orders regarding medication during the Spring Festival and should not discontinue or reduce medication on their own. Even during the holiday, continued anti-cancer treatment is essential, particularly targeted therapy medications, which should not be stopped or altered without medical guidance.
During the Spring Festival holiday, cancer patients are advised to communicate in advance with their doctors to understand the hospital’s holiday schedule and make treatment plans to ensure there are no delays in their care.
Additionally, if patients miss their treatment or delay it due to unexpected circumstances, this does not mean that their treatment has “derailed.” Cancer patients do not need to feel overly anxious or stressed; they can proactively reach out to their doctors to discuss individualized options and choose the best course of action during the holiday.
Celebrate the New Year Joyfully—Maintain an Irregular Routine
Entertainment should be enjoyed in moderation and fatigue should be avoided. During the Spring Festival, cancer patients should pay attention to maintaining a regular schedule. A consistent routine and good sleep are crucial for the recovery of cancer patients as they help boost immunity. While its fine to "sleep a little early and wake up late" during the festival, excessive sleep is not recommended; some level of activity should also be maintained. Remember to combine rest with activity and strike a balance.
During the Spring Festival, frequent visits to relatives and friends can undoubtedly impose considerable pressure on cancer patients who have weaker immunity. It is advised to wear a mask properly at all times when going out and take appropriate protective measures.
Celebrate the New Year Joyfully—Its Okay to Indulge a Bit More
Gathering with family and friends for festive meals often leads to indulgence, making it easy to forget dietary restrictions. Dr. Dong recommends that cancer patients maintain a balanced diet, avoiding excessive intake of high-protein and high-fat foods. Consuming large amounts of protein and fat can increase the burden on the digestive system, including organs like the liver and pancreas, potentially worsening their condition.
It is recommended that cancer patients maintain a light and tasty diet during the Spring Festival, balancing meat and vegetables. They should choose fresh, low-oil, high-fiber foods rich in antioxidants, consume fresh fruits and vegetables daily, include some legumes, reduce intake of processed and red meats, and avoid smoking, alcohol, and spicy foods.
The New Year Should Be Joyful—But Emotions Can Be Sensitive and Variable
During the New Year celebrations, long-lost relatives reunite, and while the gathering is lively, the excessive concern from family members can also lead to emotional fluctuations, heightened sensitivity, and even feelings of depression for cancer patients.
At this time, family members should be mindful to avoid overwhelming the patient and try to create a comfortable environment. Engaging in open communication and listening to their thoughts can help the patient maintain a peaceful mindset. Additionally, family members can encourage the patient to engage in light social activities such as listening to music, singing, or participating in moderate exercise, including walking, practicing Tai Chi, or doing the Ba Duan Jin qigong, ensuring that activities are suitable for the patient’s physical condition.
