It s scorching hot!
Many believe that respiratory diseases peak only in winter. In fact, due to various factors, summer also sees a high incidence. Hence, it is essential to stay vigilant against respiratory illnesses sneaking in with the heat.
So, how can we prevent respiratory diseases during the blazing summer?
To answer this, we invited Professor Dong Wen, Deputy Director of Hainan Cancer Hospital and Director of the Respiratory Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center at Hainan Chengmei Hospital, to share his insights on the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases in summer.
What Causes the High Incidence of Respiratory Diseases in Summer?
According to Professor Dong, two main types of respiratory diseases are common in summer. The first includes acute onset conditions such as upper respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, and bronchitis. The second involves acute exacerbations of pre-existing chronic conditions like bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis.
Professor Dong explains that the causes of increased respiratory illnesses in summer are multifaceted. Climatically, the high temperature and humidity make the body vulnerable to the invasion of "summer heat." Prolonged heat can impair the immune system, weakening the body s defenses and increasing the risk of acute respiratory infections. For those with chronic respiratory conditions, it can exacerbate their symptoms.
Additionally, in summer, people tend to prefer raw and cold foods. The drastic temperature contrast acts like a harsh blow to the vulnerable respiratory tract, easily triggering various respiratory diseases.
Professor Dong warns that although air conditioning is a “cooling savior” in summer, its hidden risks must not be overlooked. Sharp indoor-outdoor temperature differences, dry air, and dust mites accumulating inside air conditioners can all create a breeding ground for illnesses like colds and asthma.
Moreover, airborne pollen in summer can act as a trigger for allergic reactions, turning every breath into a potential spark for asthma attacks.
How to Prevent Respiratory Diseases in Summer?
Professor Dong emphasizes that multiple aspects of daily life need attention to prevent summer respiratory diseases.
Proper use of air conditioning is a key measure. Avoid setting the temperature too low, ensure regular ventilation, and clean and disinfect air vents, filters, and ducts periodically.
Personal hygiene and protection are also essential. Wear masks properly, cover your mouth and nose when sneezing, avoid staying in enclosed and crowded places for long, and wash hands frequently.
Moreover, regular exercise, spending time outdoors in fresh air, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and ensuring adequate sleep all help boost the body s ability to resist diseases.
When necessary, consider getting vaccinated against preventable respiratory infections such as influenza and meningitis.
Professor Dong advises that any signs of discomfort should not be ignored. Seek medical attention promptly to avoid worsening the condition. Early detection and treatment are key.
