Health education, the dangers of obesity

To enhance public awareness of the dangers of obesity and promote the concept of scientific weight management, Hainan Cancer Hospital and Hainan Chengmei Hospital recently jointly held the World Obesity Day and Scientific Weight Management Health Seminar, taking advantage of the opportunity presented by World Obesity Day. The event gathered experts from multiple disciplines to provide comprehensive and practical health education services to the audience.

Liu Yuehong, Vice President of Hainan Cancer Hospital and an endocrinologist, directly addressed the core health hazards brought by obesity in her speech. She stated that the essential harm of obesity lies in metabolic disorders and chronic inflammation. Excess fat, especially visceral fat, continuously releases a large amount of harmful substances, disrupting the normal physiological balance of the human body. She hopes that everyone will pay attention to weight management, adhere to a healthy lifestyle, take initiative to take responsibility for their own health, and get rid of the dual drag of overweight and obesity on life and health.

Subsequently, Chen Lili, the Deputy Director of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department, delivered a mini-lecture on exercise, comparing exercise to a "health prescription". She elaborated on core indicators such as exercise frequency and intensity, and introduced specific prescriptions for aerobic exercise, resistance training, and flexibility exercises, providing directly actionable exercise plans for different groups of people.

"Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that obesity is caused by excessive accumulation of fat and lipids in the body, often due to spleen and stomach weaknesses and excessive phlegm-dampness. It is often accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, lack of energy, reluctance to speak, and heaviness in the limbs." Dr. Shi Ke, a specialist in TCM, interprets obesity from a TCM perspective, breaking the single-minded perception that "obesity is caused by eating too much." Combining clinical experience, she shares unique weight loss methods in TCM such as cupping and acupoint embedding, and also recommends health-preserving exercises suitable for daily practice, such as Baduanjin and Wuqinxi. By balancing scientific principles with traditional health-preserving concepts, she provides new options for people who prefer TCM conditioning.

"How to eat breakfast without gaining weight? How to choose buffet dishes without exceeding the calorie limit?" Director Li Chao of the Clinical Nutrition Department's dietary education accurately hits the pain points of people's daily diet. She teaches practical "dietary tips" around four major scenarios: breakfast combination, buffet selection, adequate water intake, and takeout ordering. For breakfast, one should follow the trinity of "staple food + protein + vegetables". For buffets, one should follow the order of "vegetables first, then meat, and finally staple food". For takeout, one should prioritize steaming, boiling, and stewing methods. When craving for sweets, one should replace high-sugar snacks with sugar-free yogurt and nuts.

Meanwhile, Director Li Chao also debunked common weight loss misconceptions such as "you can lose weight by not eating staple food" and "you can eat meal replacements for a long time", making everyone understand that scientific diet is not about "dieting", but about "rational combination".

During the free consultation session, many citizens who were managing their weight gathered around the experts with their own puzzles. "I am 160cm tall and weigh 75kg. I have tried various weight loss methods but they all led to regain. What should I do?" "My child is 5 years old and overweight. I am worried about affecting their development. How should we adjust their diet and exercise?" Faced with everyone's questions, the experts listened patiently and answered one by one, providing personalized weight management advice based on each person's age, weight, and lifestyle habits.

"Today's gains are tremendous. Not only have I learned about the serious hazards of obesity, but I have also learned about suitable exercise and diet methods for myself, so I no longer have to blindly lose weight," said Ms. Wang, a citizen, with satisfaction as she held the list of suggestions given by experts.
