On
the occasion of the World Osteoarthritis Day and the Double Ninth Festival, on
October 9th, Hainan Chengmei Hospital specially invited Professor Zhang
Xianlong from the Sixth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong
University School of Medicine to lead a multidisciplinary team including
orthopedics, cardiovascular medicine, and geriatrics to carry out a public welfare
clinic activity with the theme of "Protecting Joints, Enjoying Health,
Joint Health, Walking Strongly", aiming to safeguard the bone health of
the elderly through professional diagnosis and treatment.
At
the free clinic, many citizens who had been suffering from joint pain for a
long time prepared their imaging data and medical records in advance and waited
for treatment early. The expert team conducted one-on-one consultations for
common problems such as joint pain, soreness, stiffness, and limited mobility
in the neck, shoulder, waist, hip, knee, and other parts, carefully reviewing
films and interpreting examination reports.
"I've been suffering from leg pain for over half a year, limping when I walk, and often unable to sleep at night due to the pain. I've been indecisive about whether to undergo surgery or not." Ms. Wang, 63 years old, heard that Professor Zhang Xianlong, an expert from Shanghai, would come for a free consultation, so she arrived early to wait. Professor Zhang Xianlong carefully examined Ms. Wang's X-ray film, meticulously analyzed the progression of the condition, clearly compared the advantages and disadvantages of conservative treatment and surgical treatment, and provided targeted diagnostic and treatment recommendations, successfully alleviating Ms. Wang's concerns about seeking medical care.
Elderly patients with osteoarthritis often suffer from multiple comorbidities, posing challenges to diagnosis and treatment. On-site multidisciplinary experts collaborate to assess the patient's condition, tailor personalized treatment and rehabilitation plans, and patiently address issues of concern to the public, such as medication norms, conservative treatment options, and surgical indications, providing a one-stop solution to medical inquiries. Free blood pressure measurement services are also available on-site.
In addition to one-on-one consultations, the free clinic team also conducted health education and publicity simultaneously. They disseminated health knowledge centered around daily joint maintenance for the elderly, home-based rehabilitation training, scientific weight loss, joint warmth in autumn and winter, and reasonable exercise. They also corrected common health misconceptions such as "if your joints hurt, move less", "calcium supplementation can cure osteoarthritis", and "if your joints are uncomfortable, just endure it".
Regarding the common misconceptions about joint maintenance, Professor Zhang Xianlong stated that many patients believe that joint pain requires rest and immobility. However, long-term lack of activity can lead to muscle atrophy and joint stiffness, which in turn accelerates joint degeneration and worsens the condition. Patients with osteoarthritis do not need to rest for long periods. Under the guidance of a professional physician, they can perform moderate functional exercises such as quadriceps isometric contractions and straight leg raises to enhance joint stability and reduce joint wear. Additionally, controlling body weight, keeping joints warm and protected from cold, and reducing weight-bearing activities such as climbing mountains and stairs are important ways to delay osteoarticular degeneration and protect joints.
Professor Zhang Xianlong specifically reminded that many middle-aged and elderly people blindly take calcium supplements, mistakenly believing that calcium supplementation can treat osteoarthritis. The root cause of osteoarthritis lies in the degeneration and wear of articular cartilage. Simple calcium supplementation cannot treat the disease, nor can it replace standardized diagnosis and treatment. If citizens experience symptoms such as persistent joint pain and swelling, morning joint stiffness, and limited limb movement, they should not delay or handle the situation blindly. Instead, they should promptly visit a formal medical institution for evaluation, so as to achieve early detection, early intervention, and early treatment, and prevent minor lesions from becoming severe.
Professor Zhang Xianlong, an expert in orthopedics at the Sixth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, currently serves as the Executive Deputy Director of the National Orthopedic Medicine Center and the leader of the joint surgery discipline. With years of deep experience in the field of joint surgery, Professor Zhang Xianlong boasts exquisite clinical skills and profound academic attainments. Currently, Professor Zhang Xianlong has been appointed as the Honorary President and Distinguished Expert of Hainan Chengmei Hospital. Professor Zhang Xianlong and his team of experts will regularly provide consultations and surgeries at Hainan Chengmei Hospital, as well as technical guidance and academic support, continuously contributing to the improvement of local orthopedic and joint diagnosis and treatment in Hainan.
