Small cell lung cancer is known for its high malignancy and rapid progression. Many patients feel that there is little hope for treatment upon hearing this diagnosis.
But in fact, small cell lung cancer is not a monolithic disease - if it is in the limited stage, with standardized treatment, there is still a chance to significantly prolong survival.
In this issue, we have invited Professor Yang Nong, a specially-appointed expert from Hainan Cancer Hospital/Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Hainan Medical University, to provide a detailed analysis of issues that patients are concerned about. By combining this with the guidelines for lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, we aim to help everyone cope with these issues with ease.
Is there a high chance for the treatment of limited-stage small cell lung cancer?
Professor Yang Nong: Don't give up on small cell lung cancer. There are standardized radical treatment plans for limited-stage small cell lung cancer, and the right treatment can significantly prolong survival.
Many people panic immediately when they are diagnosed with small cell lung cancer, but in fact, there is still a great chance for treatment in the limited stage.
Limited-stage refers to the condition where the tumor is confined to one side of the chest cavity without distant metastasis. By strictly adhering to clinical guidelines and standardized treatment, the prognosis can be significantly improved.
What is the standard treatment regimen for limited-stage small cell lung cancer?
Professor Yang Nong: Currently, there are two standard treatment options available in clinical practice.
The first approach: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy + immune consolidation
This is the most commonly used core protocol in clinical practice. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are conducted simultaneously to synergistically eliminate cancer cells in the body.
After the completion of concurrent chemoradiotherapy, patients with good physical tolerance and no contraindications are recommended to undergo up to 2 years of immune consolidation therapy, which can effectively reduce the probability of tumor recurrence.
The second approach: radical surgery + adjuvant chemotherapy
It is only applicable to a very small number of extremely early-stage patients with small tumor lesions and no lymph node metastasis.
Before the pathological results are confirmed, if the doctor assesses that the tumor can be completely removed, a radical surgery will be performed, followed by four cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy.
However, small cell lung cancer is highly malignant and aggressive, and most patients have lymph node metastasis when diagnosed, making eligible patients for surgery very rare.
Small cell lung cancer is relatively malignant, but limited-stage disease does not equate to a terminal illness. After diagnosis, it is important to seek treatment at a reputable medical institution as soon as possible, following standardized protocols. This can help maximize the chances of achieving longer survival and better quality of life.
