During "May Day" holiday of this year, on the dense jungle path of Limu Mountain in Hainan, several angels in white constantly asked passers-by about the direction of a village.

The tall, handsome middle-aged man in the team is called Chen Wen, Director of the Nephrology department of Hainan Chengmei Hospital.

Professor Chen Wen and his team made the trip to visit and provide guidance for Ms. Zhang, a kidney patient on peritoneal dialysis at home.

Gratitude to the angels in white on the way to seek medical treatment

Ms. Zhangs home is deep in the hinterland of Hainan Lemu Mountain, with more than 2 hours drive from the county, the traffic is very inconvenient.

High mountains and dense forests, rugged trails, intermittent cell phone signals, even the navigation is lost. Although this is the fifth time that Professor Chen Wen has visited Ms. Zhangs home, they still get lost deep in the mountains from time to time.

Two years ago, 54-year-old Ms. Zhang was diagnosed with uremia and was treated with peritoneal dialysis nearby.

Due to irregular dialysis treatment and substandard operating environment, Ms. Zhang was caught by severe peritonitis and was hurriedly sent to the provincial capital by ambulance overnight for treatment.

"When we got to the hospital, it was over 1 o’clock early in the morning. Professor Chen Wen and head nurse Luo Xiaoyu actually stood at the entrance of the hospital emergency room waiting for us. I knew at that moment that my mother would have a chance to be saved.” Ms. Zhangs daughter, Xiao Li, said she remembered the scene vividly: "Sterilization, tube change, flushing ...... Professor Chen Wen and his colleagues treat patients like their own family members. Since then, we have had an inseparable relationship with Professor Chens team.”

Patient safety is paramount. When Ms. Zhang was discharged from hospital, Professor Chen Wen was worried about her condition, he drove more than 4 hours with the team to come to Ms. Zhangs home for the first time, and guided the operation hand in hand.

As the conditions in the countryside were not good, Professor Chen Wen gave Ms. Zhang a list and sketched out the environmental requirements for home peritoneal dialysis and helped to re-improve the dialysis operating environment.

"During that time, we had to video-chat almost every day with Professor Chen and Head Nurse Luo, and they had to guide us step by step through video for each operation and environmental modification.” Xiao Li said with a little choking, "For my mother could maintain such a condition, we really need to say thanks to these white angels!”

After Ms. Zhangs dialysis environment was rectified as required, Professor Chen and his team came to this remote mountain village for the second time to "accept" the effect of the rectification.

For more than a year thereafter, Chen Wens team made 2 more home visits to Ms. Zhang to ensure the safety of the patients home treatment.

Weather together on the road of health

Ms. Zhang is just a regular one of the patients that Professor Chen Wens team ever paid home visit to.

Prof. Chen Wen introduced that they currently have more than 40 kidney disease patients on home peritoneal dialysis. These patients are located in corners of Hainan.

"For each patient, we basically make home visits two to three times a year, and the longest lasting time of home visit is 16 years.” Professor Chen Wen said. In order not to interfere with their daily medical work, they arrange almost all home visits in weekends or holidays.

Mr. Wang from Dingan was unfortunately caused by uremia at the age of 28. For 14 years, the footprints of Chen Wens team has been left again and again on the path in front of Mr. Wangs house.

About Mr. Li from Chengmai, his children are doing business outside the island, and he is staying in hometown with his partner aging over 80 years old. In May and June of last year, Mr. Li was diagnosed with uremia and required dialysis treatment. When first doing home peritoneal dialysis, Mr. Li often got infections due to his advanced age and irregular practices. "It is normal for us to run two or three times a month, in the end, I do not remember how many times I have been to Grandpa Lis home, anyway, once receive the call, we would pick up the medicine box and start regardless of the wind and rain.” Luo Xiaoyu said, "After going there for many times, even the big yellow dog of Grandpa Li became friends with us. The big yellow dog used to flail at us every time he saw us, but now when he sees us, he will run over to greet us with his tail wagging from a long distance.”

Two years ago, 52-year-old Mr. Lis business came to a halt due to the epidemic, misfortunes never come singly, he was diagnosed with uremia. The child was in high school and was about to take the college entrance exams. In order not to affect the childrens studies, the couple discussed and made the difficult decision to give up the treatment.

Professor Chen Wen and Head Nurse Luo Xiaoyu begged hard: Dont give up!

Eventually, under the careful care of Wen Chens team, Mr. Li recovered and his business took off. Last year, his child was admitted to a major university.
